In this day and age of microwavable ready meals, the idea of a cob oven might never cross your mind. However, according to the people at Eats, Shoots & Roots, it’s simple to build your own cob oven – and you can learn how on Sunday, 14 April.

Cob ovens are made from earthen materials and can be used to bake bread, pizzas and more. Participants at the workshop will get down and dirty with permaculturists Michael Schellauf and Juergen Soecknick to build an oven out of clay, rice husk and sand all from scratch.

Eats, Shoots & Roots is a social enterprise run by Soecknick with Sabina Arokiam and Shao-Lyn Low to promote permaculture through its courses, workshops and events. The trio work with communities and organisations to develop sustainable agriculture, as well as resource and waste management systems.

The cob oven building workshop runs from 8.30am until 5pm at Eats, Shoots & Roots, Bukit Gasing, PJ. The fee is RM350 with discounts for group registration.
