Record Store Day started as an annual occasion in the US to appreciate independent neighbourhood record stores. Since 2007, the concept has spread around the world, including Malaysia. Record Store Day 2015 falls on Saturday 18 April.

This year, the vinyl shop Teenage Head Records in SS14 is hosting live performances to mark the day. From 11am until late, catch Liyana Fizi, Blind Lennon, Mystery Tapes, Naza & The Kick Asteroids and Elektone (Singapore) performing in store. There will also be DJ sets and a food truck throughout the day.

Tandang Store in Ampang will have DJ sets from 2pm, live performances from local bands The Garrison and The Fridays from 4pm, and a full band line-up downstairs at Ruman Api with both Malaysian and Filipino bands all night until midnight. There will also be an exclusive re-release of Pecah, a 7″ compilation featuring Sarjan Hassan, Pusher, The Garrison and Crimescene. There’s a cover charge of RM15.

Various others shops will release special edition music on Record Store Day. Basement Record Shop in Bukit Bintang will be releasing some Malaysian punk tapes from the nineties as well as an exclusive 7″ split EP from veteran punk band The Bollocks and Singaporean punk metal band Opposition Party.

You can also look out for some of these international Record Store Day releases. So join the party and head to your nearest record store to buy some music the good, old fashioned way.
