Pekan Ampang is home to a row of pre-war shophouses, thought to be among the last remaining original colonial buildings in Selangor. It’s not just the shops which are distinctive – the neighbourhood is home to a host of old shops which have been passed from generation to generation, with families both operating the shops and living above them.

A few years ago, it was announced that the SUKE highway would lead to these shophouses being demolished. This provoked strident opposition from the community. However, it looks like the highway plans will go ahead.

The Malaysian Heritage and History Club is organising a heritage talk and photo walk with residents of the community, so that more people can understand the area’s culture and history. Running from 9.30am – 3pm, talks will be given in different languages and there will also be interactive activities such as a photo walk, food tour and even karaoke.
