As the food truck scene gathers speed in the Klang Valley, expect more meals on wheels to come your way. The Little Red Food Truck by Mission Foods (the company which makes tortilla wraps and chips) has just launched in the Klang Valley.Local food trucks have been filling a gap in the market for affordable Mexican food – from Curbside Cantina to Guac. But the Little Red Food Truck has a surprise in store: while it will be using tortilla wraps, the fillings are actually Asian inspired.Adam LiawMission Foods invited Masterchef Australia winner and Destination Flavours host Adam Liaw to create a menu that would appeal to Malaysians. The result? Fusion flavours with a gourmet twist, like Laksa Fried Chicken Wrap with Pineapple Salsa; Beef Bulgogi with Kimchi; Coconut Prawn Wrap with Spicy Tamarind Mayonnaise; Lamb Shank Rendang and Roast Carrot Hummus with Avocado. So how how well do the Asian flavours work in a tortilla wrap? “It works perfectly,” Adam Liaw said, speaking to Poskod.MY at the media launch. “Wraps are in Korean cuisine anyway – you would just wrap in lettuce, for example. So the flavours work. The response has been really good.”

Liaw himself is heavily influenced by Asian cuisine: he has family connections to Malaysia, Singapore and Japan and is the author of the cook books Two Asian Kitchens and Asian After Work. The rise of food trucks in KL is part of a wider global trend – and our city is right at the forefront of it, according to Liaw. Food trucks are no more established in Australia than they are in Malaysia. “In Sydney we have less than ten food trucks and they started less than two years ago. Even the food trucks in LA, the institutions there are taco trucks, hot dog trucks. It’s only more recently that we’ve seen more interesting food from food trucks.”The Little Red Food Truck_Ready to make its rounds for 15 June 2015 copyThe wraps from The Little Red Food Truck are priced from RM6.99++ to RM7.99++.
