What is it?

It’s a delivery service of homemade food for the month of Ramadan. If you don’t want to cook or eat out, Dish by Ili has created two different menus – one Western and one Malaysian – which can be ordered on Tuesdays and Thursdays this month. Each menu is a full meal and is delivered in a tiffin, which you get to keep.

The Local Menu includes a choice of ayam masak kicap, mutton curry and fish rendang, with sides of ulam and homemade sambal. The Western Menu dishes up options such as garlic-thyme roasted chicken and baked stingray with parsley butter, served with roast vegetables and crushed potatoes.

Who is it?

Ili Sulaiman is the one-woman entrepreneur and chef behind Dish by Ili. The former Logistics and Events Manager started catering for private events last year and now does this full-time from her home kitchen. The Tiffin Service is likely to be a seasonal special.

Many of these recipes have been passed down from Ili’s mother. With a mixed heritage of English, Chinese, Malay and Indian, Ili grew up cooking different kinds of food. As for the tiffin, that was also a part of her family life: “I wanted to bring the tiffin back. My late grandfather was a policeman and he carried one to work every day,” she says, adding, “Because it’s stainless steel, it’s hygienic and people can reuse it next time they go to the pasar.”

Each tiffin also comes tied with a beautiful batik table runner from local business Batika by Hudaa.

Go for…

For the Local Menu, the fish rendang is a winner – made with tongol, a kind of tuna, it’s meaty without being too oily. However, the roast chicken from the Western Menu is also classic comfort food – and offers something different for Ramadan. Both menus come with a dessert of dates sourced from Macao, as well as gulab jamun (Local Menu) and salted caramel brownies (Western Menu).

Loved ones. The portions for the Tiffin Service are deliberately designed to feed groups of four to six people, so that people eat together.

Cost

RM180 for the Local Menu and RM200 for the Western Menu. Free delivery within certain areas of KL and PJ.
