In the 13th Century, one Italian merchant made his way across Asia and found himself on the Silk Road while on his travels. Now, his story is going to appear on the small screen courtesy of Netflix – and also our own production talents in Malaysia.
With a budget of $90 million, production set up shop at the Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios situated in Nusajaya, Johor. The studio was constructed through the alliance between Pinewood Studios Group, UK and Khazanah Nasional Berhad. The 10-episode series is scheduled to premiere on 12 December on Netflix.
The series depicts Marco Polo’s adventures in Kublai Khan’s court in13th century China. The show has a young and fresh cast lead by Lorenzo Richelmy as the title character and Benedict Wong as Kublai Khan. One familiar face you may notice is American-Chinese actress, Joan Chen (Twin Peaks anyone?) Judging by the trailer, Marco Polo will be filled with adventure, mystery and ahem… sexy times.
