Today sees the release of “Bright Veins”, a new single and music video from Penang’s songstress Bihzhu. The perfect antidote to hump day, it’s a meditative song of optimism that lilts like a soothing lullaby.
The music video was produced by The Spacemen, and is one of the more unusual music videos we’ve seen from the local scene. With a documentary style, it captures a range of Malaysians from different walks of life: a barber in his shop, a grandmother in her kitchen, a tattoo artist in his studio, a little girl painting a picture. The intimate yet broad portrait of life suits the quiet, contemplative song perfectly.
Bihzhu is known for more upbeat, catchy songs in the jazz pop genre (her single “The Heart Way” was a radio hit and also bagged her a VIMA award for Song of the Year), so “Bright Veins” marks a departure for her. She will be touring China later this year, with shows in Zhuhai and Beijing, and we wish her all the best.
