BandLab, the Spacemen and Oktavo bring you Neue Artisans 2.0 on Saturday 9 March, a showcase of the latest works by up-and-coming Malaysian designer-makers. The event, held at Studio by the Spacemen in Kota Damansara, will feature a variety of works ranging from home furnishing, stationery and food to fashion items and jewellery.
Neue Artisans was started in 2012 by Nur Mazidah Che Ghani, designer at BandLab and Nadiah Hamzah, filmmaker at Wayangworks. The duo first met while studying in New York five years earlier. According to Nur Mazidah, it all started when Nadiah and her filmmaking partner offered a space to host a group of designer-makers to display their works.
Nur Mazidah, who is curating the showcase, explained, “We observe that there is a new wave of talented designers and artists, especially in Kuala Lumpur, making a variety of products, using not only manual craftsmanship, but also digital fabrication and computer-aided designs.”
They took under a month to put together the first showcase last January which turned into an intimate and laid back art exhibition and design market. For this year’s event, they have approached Chris Lim and Joshua Chay of the Spacemen to host Neue Artisans together with Nurlina Maarof, designer at Oktavo.
Participants include cake-bakers That Last Slice, furniture designers Lain and craft designers Awang Cutter Projex. There will also be a special installation engineered for the event by a group of young designers called Spacefighters.
The event is open to all and admission is free.
