What do politicians Zahid Hamidi, M. Kayveas and Nazri Aziz have in common? They are in the running for an award in ‘Foot in Mouth’ category at this year’s Aiyoh… Wat lah?! Awards. Hosted by Ribena Berry (as played by Jo Kukathas), the award ceremony will be held at Leonardo’s, Bangsar on Sunday 26 May.
Aiyoh… Wat Lah?! Awards is organised by Joint Action Group for Gender Equality, a group of nine women’s rights organisations. The mock awards event is aimed at highlighting sexist, misogynistic and homophobic behaviours that permeate the Malaysian society. It is also intended to encourage positive behaviour towards gender and sexuality amongst public personalities and institutions.
Other award categories include ‘Insulting Intelligence’ and ‘Cannot Ignore’. In the ‘Policy Fail’ category, two issues are nominated: the Friday sermon entitled “Awas! Jerat Valentine’s Day” prepared by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) and the female hairdresser fined by Kota Bahru council for serving a male customer.
There is also an award called ‘Right on Track’ to recognise positive developments in attaining gender equality. Award winners are chosen based on public vote. Last year’s winners include the infamous Obedient Wives Club – who blamed wives for not satisfying their cheating husbands – and Terengganu government’s bootcamp to cure teenagers of effeminate behaviour.
Aiyoh… Wat Lah?! Awards 2013 is happening on Sunday 26 May at Leonardo’s, Jalan Bangkung, Bangsar. The event starts at 4.30pm and seats are available on first-come, first-served basis. Find more information on their website.
