Two years ago, Poskod.MY interviewed local musician and composer Ooi Eow Jin. In the process of publishing the story Malaysia’s Forgotten Music Man, we learned about the extraordinary life of a man who contributed so much to Malaysia’s music history – yet had been almost forgotten by all but his own peers.

It took us by surprise when we found out that Uncle Ooi (as many like to call him) has retired from playing publicly at Hotel Majestic, bowing out as of the end of June this year. At 77 years old, Uncle Ooi is showing signs of Alzheimer’s disease, yet he has also has to take care of his eldest son who is suffering from a brain tumour.

That’s why Jimmy Yeoh and Richard Hoon, who share Mr Ooi’s alma mater of Penang Free School, proposed to organise three charity shows to raise money for the retired musician and his family. The first of these shows will be held on Sunday 19 July.

The Magical World of Piano and Strings Music will be a concert featuring three international artists: Raymond Yong from Australia, Tomonari Tsuchiya from Japan and Roeland Duijne from Holland.

The concert begins at 5:30pm and admission is via donation of RM50 or RM100.
