Ivan Lam’s “do” bag at [email protected]

At a time when we can’t escape selfies on Instagram, Wei-ling Gallery has aptly chosen to make this year’s annual [email protected] exhibition an exploration of “self-love”.

Titiled “[email protected] Mirror, Mirror On The Wall”, 12 selected artists from the rising Malaysian contemporary scene were given the opportunity to create artworks delving into the depths and many aspects of narcissism. This year, Wei-ling Gallery collaborated with Furla, the famed Italian leather goods brand, to provide Candy Bags as a canvas.

Kim Ng’s “POM POM”.

The eclectic results range from Kim Ng’s quirky, furry bag, “POM POM” which looks like it might fit right into Monsters, Inc. to Sean Lean’s “Dear God(s)” with its simple Chinese character seal in red at the bottom of the bag, to Ivan Lam’s translucent bag emblazoned with the pro-active word “do”. I personally gravitated towards Zulkifli Yusoff’s bag, “The Birds and The Tortoise”, with its monochromatic tones and intricate detailing.

The bags have been auctioned off in in support of animal welfare organization SPCA, but you can still see them on display at the exhibition at Wei-Ling Contemporary in Gardens Mall until 16 January 2014, along with other art pieces by the participating artists.
