The Cooler Lumpur Festival is back, with the theme ‘Notes from the Future’, from 17-20 August 2017 at Publika Shopping Gallery. This year, the festival is offering more workshops conducted by speakers from the US, UK, Germany, Austria, and new to the festival this year, Japan, courtesy of Japan Foundation KL.Workshops this year range from the usual literary selections to imagining a future 20 years from now. Either way, there’s something for everyone. All workshops limited to 30 pax. Here’s a rundown of what to expect:
The Cooler Lumpur Festival Workshop #1: So. You. Want. To. Get. Published.
Jointly run by British author Olivia Sudjic and local author Hanna Alkaf, this workshop is targeted at budding writers who want to get published. The Cooler Lumpur Festival Workshop #2: Kiss My Astronaut
Credited as ‘Senor Ass Wipe’ of Rocketfuel Entertainment on Linkedin, Eddy Lim is also known as the man behind Mutha Puaka. As part of Episodes partnered by Astro, he will be conducting this workshop on the future of content creation.In one hour, participants can expect to work with a talent or content creator and leave with a completed execution of an idea. The Cooler Lumpur Festival Workshop #3: Coffee with Hussain Currimbhoy
Hussain is one of the documentary and VR programmers for Sundance Film Festival. He will be presenting a short in-conversation introducing filmmakers and industry to the festival itself, the submission process, while outlining opportunities that exist for emerging and established filmmakers at the festival. The Cooler Lumpur Festival Workshop #4: Storytelling with Data Journalism
Award-winning data journalist Kuek Ser Kuang Keng will be teaching aspiring and practising journalists on using online data visualisation tools to tell their stories. This is an interactive two-hour session and participants will need to bring their own laptops. Join Scottish author Cara Ellison on an introductory workshop to writing video game barks. Barks are one-liners exclaimed by non-playing characters which is repetitive and concise. Iconic examples include “Fire in the hole!” in Counter Strike, “Probably just rats” in Dishonored, and “Stay a while and listed”, uttered by Deckard Cain in Diablo II. A professor of modern literature and cultural studies at the University of Vienna, Austria, Eva Horn is currently working on a cultural theory of climate. In this session, expect to talk about the weather and also take a stroll outside. The aim of the workshop is to understand how climate and weather shape our experiences.
