The 5.9 magnitude earthquake that struck Ranau, Sabah on 5 June has affected many people. The death toll has risen to 18. There has also been damage to houses and infrastructure. People who work in the local tourism industry, such as guides, will suffer as their livelihood has been disrupted. There was also a 5.2 magnitude earthquake just two days ago, among dozens of other tremors.

Here are a few ways that you can help those affected:

1. MERCY Malaysia
MERCY extends medical and psychosocial support via its volunteers in the aftermath of disasters. Online donations can be made via this link.

2. Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC)
The MCMC has reactivated its humanitarian fund with the help of Malaysian telecommunication companies.

Members of the public can donate via short text messaging system till July 8 by typing GEMPA <space> 1/3/5/10/15/20/30/40/50 following the cash amount of RM1, RM3, RM5, RM10, RM 20, RM30, RM40 or RM 50, before sending it to 13999.

3. Mount Kinabalu Guides Association (Pemangkina)
A fund for the mountain guides who work on Mt Kinabalu. Donations can be made directly to their bank account, “Persatuan Malim Gunung Kinabalu”

4. The Board of Trustees of the Sabah Parks
