With the theme “Celebrating Universal Love”, Publika is screening a film by the celebrated late filmmaker Yasmin Ahmad every Monday of February. Each film begins at 8pm at The Square and admission is free.
Sepet (3 February) – A story of interracial romance set in Ipoh, Sepet stars a young Sharifah Amani in the leading role as Orked, a Malay girl who falls in love with Jason, a Chinese boy.
Gubra (10 February) – Gubra is the sequel to Sepet. Released two years after Sepet, Gubra picks up the storyline of the characters a few years later.
Mukhsin (14 February) – The third and final film in the “Orked trilogy” is a prequel to Sepet, and a story of childhood love, which won a special mention at the Berlin Film Festival under the children’s category.
Muallaf (17 February) – Brian Yap, Sharifah Amani and Yeo Yann Yann star in this film about religion. Muallaf was originally first released in Singapore because of censorship issues in Malaysia.
Talentime (24 February) – Yasmin Ahmad’s final feature film centres on a school music teacher and the dramas surrounding a school talent competition.
