The old proverb “the grass is always greener on the side” seems to hold true in Malaysian hip hop duo Dose Two’s first official music video. Directed by Al Ibrahim, the video for “A Day Away” sees the Vix Chandra (Sayla) and Naqib Shamsuri (QBe) leading out their humdrum lives in the country and in the city.

As the melodic refrain loops around, the video keeps the viewer in a state of insomniac uncertainty. The muted palette and shifting, shallow focus lends a lonely weight to the lyrical hook: “It’s nice to be away, to be astray.”

Visually, it’s a meditative effort that subverts the usual slick format we’ve come to expect of hip hop videos. Dose Two have spoken about their music as an attempt to reflect the lives of ordinary working Malaysians. This certainly comes through in “A Day Away”, where the daily grind leaves no room for grandeur – only Ramly burgers and the occasional goat.
